Masters FAQ

Do I need to be a good swimmer?
No. We’ll make you better, no matter your current level. Whether you are pro or very very novice, there is a place for you here.

Do I need to be hard-core?
No. You can be if you want to be, but you don’t need to be. Some Masters will be here everyday in hard training for upcoming meets, some will be swimming once in a while or just to keep in shape, others to compete with their swimming friends, etc. We are here to meet a variety of needs.

Do I need to come every day?
No. You can choose any or all of our offered weekly practices.

Do I need to compete in meets?
No. You can if you want, but you don’t need to.

Do I need to stay for the whole workout?
No. We understand that people have work and life schedules that do not always coincide with our practice times. If you want to swim but need to come a little late or leave a little early, that is fine.

Do I need to be a member of the York Y?
No. We offer options for Y members and options for non-members.

Do I need to commit for a long period of time?
You can if you want to, but you don’t need to. You can come as much or as little as you wish.

Do I need to be old?
First, you are only as young or old as you feel. Second, “Masters” refers to anyone who likes swimming, wants to swim with a group, and who doesn’t want to swim on a college or competitive club team. “Old” or “young.”

Do I need to be able to do all four swimming strokes?
No. If you don’t know them and want to learn, we will teach you. If you don’t know them and don’t care to learn them, we will work with you on the strokes you want to do.

What if I’m a triathlete and only want to do freestyle?
Fine. We’ll help you improve your freestyle and thus your swimming times for your tris.

What if my work/life schedule is inconsistent?
That’s why we offer several options for practice times. If mornings are better for you, we have mornings; if noontimes are better, we have those as well.

Can I come just once in a while for a technique refresher?
Yes. We’re here to help you meet your swimming needs.
